(More customer reviews)I recenty acquired this stick for the express purpose of carrying it while walking my dogs. Lets face it, it is designed as a discreet weapon. As such, I was very impressed with it. The polypropylene is extremely resillient giving the stick plenty of strength yet keeping the weight down. I usually carry it tucked under one arm swagger stick-style but do use it for weight bearing when traversing inclined terrain. My one and only criticism of the stick is the unique polygonal handle. When used extensively as a true walking support item, the shape tends to press a bit uncomfortably on the palm. Those seeking a true walking aid might be better suited using a pistol grip style handle for weight support. With that said, the polygonal handle is very rugged and well suited for devastating target areas if the weapon was to be used for combat purposes. One other minor point of note, this stick is VERY intimidating and could draw unwanted police attention depending on your area. The Cold Steel Blackthorn stick might look somewhat more natural and draw less attention.
In conclusion, this stick is awesome and I will rarely leave home without it. Already just brandishing it at a pack of wild dogs was enough to fend off a potential attack. Considering the price and durability of this stick, I would highly recommend it. Perfect for the average person strolling about, just a tad uncomfortable on the palm for those needing a true weight bearing walking stick. For the price, you can't go wrong.

My biggest fear was it would not be heavy. I was thrilled when it arrived I found it to be sturdy! I loved the design. The handle is also easy for him to grip and also provides that sense of support he needs. He didn't not want a traditional cane nor did he want anything with ball on the top that you see in most rustic designs. This was perfect!

(More customer reviews)I ordered a Hickory Walking Stick and got something made of Bianbai Wood. What??? Try doing a search for Bianbai Wood. I'm not even sure there is such a thing. And even if there is, I bought hickory. The product information states that they are the "largest supplier in the U.S." and that the product is "handcrafted from wood in the U.S." In truth, the product is shipped from Canada and Made in China. "Handcrafted from wood in the U.S"...I've never seen, much less heard of a tree called a Bianbai...oh wait, the back of the tag says it is made from "All New Material"...hmmm, maybe that's it. It's a brand new tree, but again, I paid for hickory. Like the other reviewer said, the bottom isn't finished either. He said they skipped finishing his under the tip, on mine it's the bottom 10 inches. it goes from a nice, dark brown finish to blonde bare wood. To be fair, it does seem sturdy and it has a good feel to it. Lightweight also. I just expect to get what is advertised, as I'm sure you do as well. I will keep the staff because I'm leaving on a hiking trip next week. However, I will not buy anything from this company again. Companies need to learn that we can just as easily buy our things from others. This is false advertisement at best. Oh, I almost forgot, it does come with a flower etched into it. Wish I would have read that review before I bought it, because the pic doesn't show it and it isn't mentioned in the description. I'm a guy. I don't like flowers on my stuff. If you wanna buy a walking staff that is nothing like it is portrayed in the description, made of bianbai wood, and made in china, well then this is perfect for you.

I got my 2 poles as a set and was free with purchase of Mountainsmith Women's Laurel Backpack. I used only one pole at a time because I wanted one hand free and often switch pole from one hand to another. Though I relied on only one pole, I never fell "yet" even in the dark (in the rain at White Oak Canyon and Ceder Run at AT, Virginia). Of course, you will need good hiking boots to balance your feet. I have mine about a year now so can't tell for long lasting quality.

Telescopic Walking Stick Review

(More customer reviews)I prefer wooden walking staffs, but wanted something that I could fit into luggage while traveling. I took a chance on the length of this one, which isn't specified. By my own unofficial measurement, it's just a little under 26 inches fully collapsed, which will fit into a large suitcase (diagonally) or a long duffel. So that's okay for me. Don't know what the story is for bringing it in an airplane cabin as a loose item, like a cane.
As for quality, you don't get what you don't pay for. I prefer that phrasing, since you don't always get what you do pay for. Other people have commented on the compass. It's basically a non-functional decoration, not even consistent enough to apply an offset, but that's a non-issue for me. The important thing is the construction of the stick, and that seems solid enough. I pulled the bottom section out entirely to look at the locking mechanism. It's a sort of plastic expanding wedge which may or may not be reliable in the long run. Don't under-tighten it, but I'd be careful about over-tightening it too. The instructions warn not to rely on the staff to support your full weight, but it does seem pretty strong. The shock absorbing mechanism is stiff enough not to be a distraction during normal walking.
If you're going to do serious wilderness hiking, then invest some more money in a higher quality pole. If you're going to navigate by compass, then spend the money to buy a good compass. For casual walking and hiking, though, I think this is a pretty good deal, and I'm satisfied.
UPDATE on the compass. I thought it was better to have no compass than one which was totally non-functional, so I pried it out of the handle. There was a little glue holding it in, but not much. Then I noticed that it seemed to be working properly. Checked it against a better compass, and the two agreed with each other. Popped it back in the handle, and it wouldn't work again. Took it out, it worked as well as you can expect for a cheap little micro compass. So something in the handle is slightly magnetized, or there's just too much metal around it. I'll leave it in, friction from the rubber handle should hold it in there, and just remember that I'd need to take it out to use it! Not what was intended, I'm sure.

Sierra Stix Trekking Poles - Pair Review

(More customer reviews)After doing a fair amount of research, I decided on purchasing the Sierra Stix trekking poles. Their specifications are comparable with other trekking poles that cost twice as much. When I received the poles, I really liked them. They were what I expected with the weight, adjustment capabilities, shock absorber, etc. However, after hiking only 25 miles with them they have failed in multiple locations. The locking mechanism quit working entirely in one of the poles. No amount of twisting will release the locking mechanism. Fortunately the locking mechanism broke in such a way that the poles are stuck in the extended position enabling me to finish my hike with them. Also, the metal tip on one of the poles broke off in the course of the hike and the tip on the other pole has completely worn down. I expect some degree of wear on the metal tips, however, being worn completely down over the course of 25 miles is not acceptable. In an effort to save on cost, I'm sure that the manufactures used a cheaper unhardened steel that is not designed to last under hiking conditions. The trails that I hike on are mostly soft dirt with occasional rock fields -- typical mountain hiking conditions. While these poles look good on paper, they are not designed to actually be used as trekking poles. A couple other small complaints about the poles: the buckles for the wrist straps slip requiring constant readjustment throughout the hike, and the buckles are located in a very inconvenient location where they sit uncomfortably on the wrists. In summary, I would not recommend these poles to anyone who intends to hike more than 25 miles with them.
