(More customer reviews)i originaly ordered this rod, as an anchor pole for my king fish rig. i used an ugly stick at first but needed something a little stiffer. for $29 this pole can't be beat. its a great buy. i got the 12 ft med action to get some distance on my anchor. i should, or just might get the 16footer for surf casting. i live 10 miles from a bass pro s, and searched for a rod like this, but the price was too high. so i took the chance for $29.00, and okuma has a good reputation. i'm really happy with this. can't wait for warm weather and hit the piers..watch out kingfish, i'm comin for ya!!

(More customer reviews)To be fair this rod was given to me by my late father-in-law. He took very good care of his gear and this rod appeared almost new. And, it is the bottom of Fenwick's lineup too.
Fished it for the first time this weekend. Very light-duty perch and rock bass perhaps a pound at most. Casting was OK with Mepps, Daredevils and the like. Sensitivity seemed good and "fighting action...well, I would not put the action of Saturday in the "fighting" category, so hard to evaluate there.
However, I snagged the bottom and while attempting a de-snag the rod snapped (about 6" down from the joint)with what I though was fairly little force applied. I've done this sort of thing hundreds of times over the course of the years with other rods and never had a rod break.
Gotta say, I am not impressed! Probably will go to St Croix or some other manufacturer before I'd go back to a Fenwick. Your mileage may vary. I know a lot of people feel these rods are a great value.

(More customer reviews)I bought this Reel and Rod Combo to take on a family vacation, in order to teach my 8 year-old how to fish (if we ended up anywhere near the water). I didn't have any fishing gear, and only dim (but great)memories of my dad teaching me when I was a kid.
Well, this kit has everything you need. Rod, reel, line, weights, floats, lures and hooks. I know it's not for the really-serious fishers out there, but this worked fantastic for us! My son even caught a fish!
I'd definitely recommend this to all my friends!

Shakespeare Medium Action Excursion Soft Case Kit Combo (6-Feet 6-Inch) Review

(More customer reviews)First things first: the Amazon photo does NOT show the included soft-sided case. The case is filled with soft foam with compartments cut-out for the rod, reel, and mini tackle box. The only down side is that the case is fabric, so it WILL show dirt and absorb anything nasty that you put it into. So, take care of the tackle box. Also note that the case has an area between the tackle box hole and the reel hole to cut out a space for a jar of Power Bait. Two minutes with a sharp knife and you are set. You can also lift out the main block of foam in order to stuff flat items underneath: stringer, package of snelled hooks, plastic bags, etc.
As for the combo itself, I love it. Keep in mind that this is budget tackle. This is comparable to a $20 rod/reel combo in quality (in fact, except for the color, the reel is IDENTICAL to one that came with a Shakespeare $25 2-piece combo). What you are paying for here is the convenience of a little package that you can leave in your trunk, or carry with you that is MUCH less cumbersome than a standard 2-piece combo. The old saying is that the .22 that you have with you is better than the .45 you left at home. The same goes for fishing rods. There are better combos out there, but this is one that you can have with you all the time.
Other than the fact that the case is fabric (mentioned above), the only other complaint is that, every now and then, when I cast, I also cast out the very top section of the rod. The cure is to simply be certain that every section is pushed together firmly. Other than that little tiny problem, this rod/reel combo has been flawless. I have taken a few trout with this little beauty.

(More customer reviews)Do not waste your money on this product. This is probably the worst product I've ever purchased through amazon and its associated merchants. The workmanship is really crappy. Plastic handle. Plastic eyelets. Poorly glued. I used this pole on a trip to the bahamas recently. With the first strike, the pole itself cracked where the thickest part of the rod meets the handle. I managed to land the less than 1 lb reef fish, but the pole was rendered useless. Then upon collapsing the pole, the eyelets came unglued. What crap! This is worthy of zero stars! There are much better options for your money.

(More customer reviews)I've had one of Daiwa's pack rods for many years. At that time it came in a rectangular carrying case and the guides were thread wrapped - rather than taped. As a friend has had one with the "T" shaped case for 25 years, it must be somewhat older than that. Because it can be broken down to such a small size - it is an excellent rod for canoe portage fishing trips and for hiking in through the brush to the best trout streams. I have caught everything from 12 pound northern pike to brook trout and pan fish with this rod. In recent years my wife has purchased one as well. While it will never have the natural feel of a one piece rod, it does surprisingly well for coming in five pieces. My wife says it is my lucky rod, and after many years of "borrowing" it from me - I bought her one of her own. She loves to fish for bronze-backs and has already put fillets in the frying pan numerous times.

(More customer reviews)Purchased so I could keep it in my car for those "Just in case" moments. Used it several times and have two general gripes that leave me wanting more.
1) the reel doesn't seem that great. I understand it isn't a $100, 10bb, graphite coated reel, but at the same time I have other inexpensive reels that are lighter, appear more durable, and actually lock when forward motion stops. It just feels sloppy. Did I mention the paint chips almost immediately... just annoying.
2) While I realize a multi-part rod will eventually come apart, this one seems to do it rather quickly. After every 4-5 casts I found myself adjusting one part of the rod or another.
Other than that the setup and breakdown times are short, and it is handy to have. I could probably just swap reels, but why should I have to. I just keep wondering if another $15 dollars would have given me more peace of mind.

(More customer reviews)I bought this mainly for the rod. I have tried many telescopic rods, and most are far from perfect, including this one, but, this is the best one I have found so far. What I liked most about this one is the small size, it is very easy to put in a small pack or fishing purse. It is fairly sturdy for it's size, I have reeled in a few decent size trout with it. I don't think I would use it for anything larger that 12-14" trout. The only problems I had with the rod, was some of the eyes weren't glued too well, and would come loose. I just glued them back and all is good now. Overall, a good combo for the price.

(More customer reviews)I have two of these and they work great for channel catfish. I have not used them for large blues or caught a flathead on one, but for large channels they hold up nicely. The bait alarm seems gimicky but properly adjusted it has alerted to me to many fish when my back is turned, I'm snelling a hook and not watching, or down the bank putting a fish on the stringer. To make the spincast bait alarm work correctly you have to point the rod tip toward the water so the rod holder needs to be the right kind, not a verticle one. Bass Pro sells a nice bank rod holder that works well with these combos. In 3 years I have had to replace the batteries once on one of the reels (very easy to do), and of course the line should be changed out at least once a year. This is a good combo for beginners and serious fishermen alike, it should not let you down.

The initial performance was good; I used it to catch a dozen or so rainbow trout while fishing in the Donner Lake region of California. The padded bag survived the trip quite well, and storage is more than adequate. The only flaw I encountered was some loosening of the rod sections after several casts. If you don't pause to push everything in tightly periodically, the rod tip (or even the whole rod) will separate and get flung into the lake with your lure.

The problem is this item is described as having "stainless steel guides with smooth ceramic inserts"! It absolutely does not have inserts, ceramic or otherwise!! This was one of the main reasons for buyingShakespeare® Telescoping Spinning Rod this rod over Eagle Claw's "Pack it". Very disapointing as this was bought for specific trip; too late to get something else.
