Tracks Lite Walking Staff - In Your Choice of Sizes Review

Tracks Lite Walking Staff - In Your Choice of Sizes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned the Tracks Lite Walking Staff for over 15 years. I have arthritis in my hands, ankles and knees. The pole is extremely light weight - 10 ounces for the 48 inch length. I can carry it without fatigue for an extended hike. The walnut knob is smooth and perfect for resting my hand on the top of the pole while descending, so I don't have to maintain a painful grip on the pole. The aircraft aluminum has been more than strong enough for any amount of weight I've put on it and shows no fatigue. The wrist strap is comfortable and works well for either supporting my weight on my wrist, or letting the pole drag loosely behind me as I crawl around rocks or trees. With the 48 inch length I have been able to strap it to the side of my backpack without interfering with walking. I am 5'6" and the 48" length works well for either ascending or descending steep trails. Taller people may wish to consider the 52" staff.
I have had two minor issues. The foam grip is not closed cell, so it retains water during those wet Northwest Washington hikes. Also, after 15 years the foam has gotten a bit stiff. The rubber foot can come off in mud or when dragging the pole. I have lost two this way. The pole functions well without the rubber foot, but tears up the trail more and is more likely to skid on rock. Replacement feet and grip are available from Cascade Designs.
Tracks Foot (Paw Print with Adapter)
Tracks Rubber Foot Replacement
I don't find either of these problems to be more than slightly annoying. The pole itself is still the best I have used. I prefer the simplicity, lightness and stability over any adjustable pole I have tried.

Tracks Sherlite Staff Review

Tracks Sherlite Staff

Excellent relief for the hiker who also carries a camera. This one's price and construction are well matched.

This adjustable-length walking staff is built with the same features as the Sherlock staff, but without a foam sheath so the length-adjustment push-button holes are exposed. It has an adjustable Wedge Lock wrist loop, a removable walnut knob with a universal camera mount, and a spike tip beneath a removable rubber foot. Tracks walking staffs and trekking poles help you walk smarter. They reduce the impact of each step you take so that weight which is normally carried by your lower body is transferred to your arms and torso, lessening the stress on your legs by 510 pounds or more. This means you get more power and traction going uphill, and save your knees and ankles when coming back down. All Tracks staffs are hand-built with high-strength, lightweight anodized aluminum tubing. They are available as single walking staffs and paired trekking poles. Their soft foam handgrip stays comfortable hour after hour, while their adjustable wrist straps aid transfer of weight when walking.

Mountainsmith Rhyolite 6061 Trekking Poles - Pair

Mine stayed strong for crossing streams or hiking on rocky trails, especially at Mount Osceola Trail in New Hampshire while it was very slippery with snow and icy water. I got my 2 poles as a set and was free with purchase of Mountainsmith Women's Laurel Backpack. I used only one pole at a time because I wanted one hand free and often switch pole from one hand to another. Though I relied on only one pole, I never fell "yet" even in the dark (in the rain at White Oak Canyon and Ceder Run at AT, Virginia). Of course, you will need good hiking boots to balance your feet. I have mine about a year now so can't tell for long lasting quality.

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC PA Hiking Poles (Pair) Review

LEKI Super Makalu COR-TEC PA Hiking Poles (Pair)

I am partial to Leki hiking poles and these are the best that I have used. I have used them on Mt. Kenya, Kilimanjaro, on 4 weeks of hiking in the Andes, hiking small peaks in Scotland, and in many places in the US. They are comfortable, solid, durable poles. The grip material is easier on the hands than rubber. The grip angle is nice. Repair parts are available all over the world (though I have only replaced the tips). I have no complaints and lots of compliments about these poles.

Hike with confidence with this pair of LEKI Super Makalu Hiking Poles, which provides a comforting feeling of security and balance as you trek over rugged terrain. It features LEKI's Soft Antishock System (SAS), an internal suspension system that cushions the impact of each pole plant for comfort and security--especially while descending trails. The COR-TEC grips offer a comfortable, ergonomic design made of 80 percent natural, ground cork. The shaft's 15-degree positive angle keeps the wrist in neutral position during pole plants and properly places the pole tip for optimum support. The concave, cylindrical carbide flextips offer secure hold when walking off road. The Auto Comfort strap adjusts without the use of buckles and is lined with a soft, wicking material that dries quickly. LEKI's Easy Locking System (ELS) provides a secure adjustment hold with the least amount of torque (hand strength required).
It's named after the Makalu peak in the Himalayas, the fifth largest mountain in the world at 8,475 meters and believed to be named after the throne of the Hindu god Shiva.

About LEKILEKI, the world’s leading manufacturer of ski, hiking and trekking poles, had its start in Kircheim, Germany as a hobby of its founder, Karl Lenhart, an airframe mechanic and avid skier. Lenhart believed aluminum would make a superior ski pole compared to the heavy steel models available in the late 1940’s. After successfully creating lightweight poles for his friends, in 1954, the hobby became a full time business. LEKI originated the use of nylon webbing for straps and created plastic molded grips and baskets in place of metal and leather. Additionally, Lenhart developed an aluminum tempering process that produces pole shaft with incomparable strength, durability, and reliability.
In 1984, Klaus Lenhart, Karl’s son, assumed leadership and shortly there after developed the first dual-component grip. He is also responsible for improving adjustable pole-locking technology and grip innovations such as the Trigger Click-In system and COR-TEC, a material made of real cork and latex. As the ski market continued to flourish, LEKI began manufacturing hiking poles primarily for European mountain guides. The concept of using two poles as means of relieving stress on knee joints and the lower back appealed to climbers who also saw benefits in performance and safety. LEKI poles eventually caught on with the general hiking and trekking population that recognized and appreciated the preventive health benefits as well as the climbing support and stabilizing effects. In 1990, LEKI USA was incorporated. The North American market has embraced the company’s line of alpine, Nordic, back country, mountaineering, Nordic walking, and trekking poles. Like their European counterparts who have been loyal to LEKI for nearly five decades, North American outdoor enthusiasts know and appreciate LEKI quality and value.

Trekking Hiking Pole for Serious Hikers (Ultra Light & Adjustable) Review

I was looking for a trekking pole that was able to fit into a carry-on bag. I sent a note to the company but did not hear back from them and so, pressed for time, I ordered anyway. It was long, even collapsed. I cannot comment on the quality or endurance of the item as it was not used. I really wanted a collapsible pole that could fit into a average size carry-on bag.

LEKI Peak AERGON XL Antishock Trekking Poles

I've been hiking for 40 years and usually have used free walking "sticks" so was a little skeptical about spending 150 bucks for store-bought. But....after using these poles on my last 4 outings (total about 50 miles of Northern California Trinity Alps Wilderness) I'm convinced they have taken 10-20% of the strain/stress off my knees and overall energy consumption on hard uphill/downhill/stream crossings. For flat walking you don't much need them but for all the other conditions they are great! Easily adjustable, lightweight, and since I've been hiking solo more, they allow me to feel more safe when hiking on difficult trail conditions. I'd reccomend them for any age hiker. The anti-shock feature really works.

Built for strength and reliability on even the most challenging terrain, LEKI's Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles allow you to tackle any adventure with confidence. Extended grips and high-performance features make the Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles a premium offering.Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles feature LEKI's Soft Antishock System (SAS) Lite that reduces stress on the joints, muscles and ligaments. The combination of internal steel spring and elastomer creates a smooth and unique suspension system that is quieter and reduces shock more effectively than other designs. LEKI places the SAS Lite system closer to the point of impact by embedding it inside the shaft of the lower pole section, keeping the spring cleaner and requiring less maintenance.Incorporating a 15-degree positive angle that preserves a natural position for your wrists, dynamic, lightweight AERGON grips have an ovoid shape that can be palmed or held traditionally. A rubberized, dimpled top offers a textured grip point and easy-adjust straps reduce stress on your wrists and provide additional security and comfort. The extended length of the Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles' grips allows you to grasp lower on the shaft, eliminating the need to shorten the length of the poles every time you encounter a steep slope or side hill traverse.LEKI's Super Lock System (SLS) uses wide thread patterns and steep-angled lock mechanisms to provide quicker and easier adjustments and is up to 60 times more secure than other locking systems. The SLS locking system is far less prone to loosening while in use, giving you peace of mind even in challenging situations. Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles employ carbide flex tips that deflect up to 30 degrees without damaging the lower pole sections. This reduces the risk of pole breakage if the pole should get caught between rocks or tree roots on the trail. Telescopic Walking Stick Review

Telescopic Walking Stick
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I prefer wooden walking staffs, but wanted something that I could fit into luggage while traveling. I took a chance on the length of this one, which isn't specified. By my own unofficial measurement, it's just a little under 26 inches fully collapsed, which will fit into a large suitcase (diagonally) or a long duffel. So that's okay for me. Don't know what the story is for bringing it in an airplane cabin as a loose item, like a cane.
As for quality, you don't get what you don't pay for. I prefer that phrasing, since you don't always get what you do pay for. Other people have commented on the compass. It's basically a non-functional decoration, not even consistent enough to apply an offset, but that's a non-issue for me. The important thing is the construction of the stick, and that seems solid enough. I pulled the bottom section out entirely to look at the locking mechanism. It's a sort of plastic expanding wedge which may or may not be reliable in the long run. Don't under-tighten it, but I'd be careful about over-tightening it too. The instructions warn not to rely on the staff to support your full weight, but it does seem pretty strong. The shock absorbing mechanism is stiff enough not to be a distraction during normal walking.
If you're going to do serious wilderness hiking, then invest some more money in a higher quality pole. If you're going to navigate by compass, then spend the money to buy a good compass. For casual walking and hiking, though, I think this is a pretty good deal, and I'm satisfied.
UPDATE on the compass. I thought it was better to have no compass than one which was totally non-functional, so I pried it out of the handle. There was a little glue holding it in, but not much. Then I noticed that it seemed to be working properly. Checked it against a better compass, and the two agreed with each other. Popped it back in the handle, and it wouldn't work again. Took it out, it worked as well as you can expect for a cheap little micro compass. So something in the handle is slightly magnetized, or there's just too much metal around it. I'll leave it in, friction from the rubber handle should hold it in there, and just remember that I'd need to take it out to use it! Not what was intended, I'm sure.

These Nordic Walking poles, made by Leki, are GREAT! The poles are well-made, very light weight and well-balanced. The Nordic glove is very comfortable. The gloves are also very easy to release from the pole with Leki's quick release system. Nordic walking is a relatively new sport in the United States, but one can see people all over in Europe and the "Northern Countries" out Nordic walking. It is a great sport; my family and I have taken it up and we all love it!

Dual aluminum and carbon construction, streamlined grips and height adjustability make LEKI Instructor Nordic walking poles ideal for advanced fitness walkers. High-performance wrist straps and fitness-specific rubber walking tips equip the Instructor with the features needed for aerobic activity. Rapidly growing in popularity in the United States, Nordic walking is a fresh approach to fitness. Started by the Finnish cross-country ski team to maintain conditioning during snow-less summer months, Nordic walking burns at least 20 percent more calories than regular walking. Two specially designed poles are used in a manner that mimics cross-country skiing, swinging to match each step you take and working your upper body while you walk. Nordic walking poles have a narrower grip than traditional trekking poles and feature form-fitting wrist straps and tapered rubber tips designed specifically for fitness walking. LEKI utilizes lightweight anodized aluminum in the upper shaft of the two-section Instructor and constructs the lower shaft from ultra-light carbon. By utilizing carbon, LEKI reduces the overall swing weight of the poles to a mere 16 ounces per pair while the aluminum increases the overall durability of the poles. Nordic walking subjects your wrists to a great amount of repetitive stress. The Instructor's Energy +30 trigger straps are designed to help alleviate this issue. Completely hugging your wrist and hand, Energy +30 trigger straps provide secure support and help to absorb the shock caused by the impact of each stride. An integrated click-release enables you to fully adjust the straps and disengage them from the poles when you need your hands free. When you're ready to go again, simply pop the straps back onto the grips and you can be on your way without any need for readjusting. The foam of LEKI's AirERGO Nordic trigger grip provides a firm handhold and helps to reduce the sweat and tenderness caused by less forgiving grips. Designed to deflect up

I got these for my wife, and she thinks they're gorgeous (I do, too). I think they're not as light and agile as my Leki carbon poles, but she thought those were too black and macho looking, and chose these. I've hiked around some with these Luaus, and they're very nice and comfortable with their soft, flexible, easily adjustable straps, and their dense cork grips which will only get more comfortable and better looking with time. I purchased a pair of these based on the cheap price compared to other hiking poles. I am a light hiker and used the poles only for gradual descents down hills. About the fourth time I used these, the lower shaft on one pole broke and it would no longer extend to it's full length. On the other pole, the tip had already broken off after the second use, but that part I could live with. Overall, these appear to be nothing more than typical Chinese made junk. Avoid these and pay more for better poles.

Eddie Bauer Hiking Pole Combo w/LED SOS & Compass Review

Eddie Bauer Hiking Pole Combo w/LED SOS and Compass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tha adjustability and anti-shock capability of these poles at this price ($20/set) is a great deal. However the quality of the compass and light heads is very poor. I got a set of these for a Christmas present purchased from Target--the compass didn't work (very cheap compass) and the battery channel in the light head was broken. I took them back to Target to replace them. They had 4 left and all the heads were broke in a various ways. I got a refund from Target and ordered a set from PFT Supply via Amazon.com here. They arrived on time (2-day Prime) but the compass doesn't work at all and the plastic pin that holds the head-hinge down is broke off so the head flops open and closed (not supposed to open at all on the compass head). I considered exchanging them but have come to the conclusion that it's just a poor design issue and that even if I got one that was not broke it wouldn't be long before it was. As such I'm keeping them. They're going to be used for casual hiking as very basic poles. They'll work fine for that. As I said the functioning of the poles themselves works just fine. Adjustability is easy and they seem to stay where they're adjusted to--at least when they're new. It's just a problem with the light and compass features of the head. I carry a real compass (and a Garmin Rino GPS/radio) along with me as well as a real flashlight so I won't rely on these gimmicky features anyway. For the price of $10 per pole + free shipping (Prime) they're a good buy if you want just basic collapsible anti-shock poles. Eddie Bauer of today is nowhere near the quality it used to be.

Very handy for keeping poles in the house, and the strap lengthens for wear across the body to more evenly distribute the weight if you get tired of using your poles on long walks, and don't have a daypack with pole holders. These poles arrived very quickly and were as advertised. I have used trek poles for years in doing archaeology in the Flint Hills and I wanted poles to use for urban walks on concrete and asphalt. I got these poles because they were advertised as "shock absorbing". Maybe I should have done a little more research. Shock absorbing can barely be felt with the poles, which I have not tried out in the field yet. So the 3 star rating is less the capability of the poles as the description being less than I felt would have told me that when we talk about absorbing shock, we are talking about a "give" of 1.0 to 1.5 cm. These poles are a little heavier than my old ones so I'm not sure what my arms will feel like after a day in the field with them. I am sure they will give me the same service in the Flint Hills of Kansas and Oklahoma that my old ones have done. For anyone who has not used trekking poles before, be sure and do your homework.

Leki Corklite AERGON Speedlock Trekking Poles Review

Leki Corklite AERGON Speedlock Trekking Poles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review will be a comparison between the two hiking poles I have owned, the Leki Corklite Aergon and the Black Diamond Trail Shock Trekking Pole.
I did some research before I purchased my original pair of poles (the Black Diamond) and was confused by what features would be most important to me. There were different types of handles, some had differing degrees of shock absorption, and then of course there are the flick locks compared to the twist lock. I went to my local outdoor store (REI) to check out the different poles and immediately fell in love with the new corklite handles on the Lekis. I almost bought those until a sales person convinced me to get the Black Diamonds. I eventually traded them back for the Lekis since they have a good return policy and I am quite satisfied now.
Here are my thoughts on the different parts of the trekking pole.
Handles: I wasn't sure what feature would be most important and thought it would likely be the flick locks or the shock system. Part of the reason I decided on getting the Black Diamonds was because it had a shock system that went along with the flick locks (Leki does not currently make such a pole as they apparently haven't come up with a design that satisfies them that incorporates both those features on a pole). I thought these features would override the importance of how the handles feel, but for me that was not to be the case. That isn't to say that the Black Diamond handles are terrible. It is a decent quality pole. But they are soft and easily get warm and after about two hours of gripping warm handles in 90 degree weather it gets to where you want cooler handles. Also, the new corklite handles aren't made completely of cork. It appears to be made of some sort of mix of rubber/plastic/with bits of cork mixed in that makes the handle stay cool but with enough texture to give good grip. The black that runs up through the handle is actually plastic and the very top of the handle is rubber so that if you grip it from the very top your hands won't slip off. When I first gripped this newer corklite handle in the store I immediately fell in love with the feel of this grip and it almost made me buy those poles right then. I should have. In addition, these poles feel like they have the perfect thickness for my hands (medium sized woman's hands) and would also probably work well if I ever needed to use gloves because colder weather since they have a narrower grip. There also seems to be a bit more tilt to the handle which might not seem like a big deal, but it definitely increases comfort on the trail. I actually wouldn't have minded more of a tilt, and some poles out there do have that feature. As you are going downhill, you flick your wrists up to cause the pole to go forward. Then you are pressing into the ground with your wrist locked at an awkward, vulnerable angle which doesn't feel comfortable. The more tilt the handle has, the more ergonomically useful the handle is. This is why I actually prefer to grip the poles from the top when I descend. I place my palms at the very top part of the handle and allow my fingers to wrap around the knobby part. This allows my wrists to stay at a more natural straight position. It also means I don't have to constantly be changing the height of my poles as I go up and down the trail. I keep them at the perfect height for both ascending a hill and walking level, and then when I go downhill I grab the top part of the pole and it works out perfectly for me. The Black Diamond has an extended handle so that you can slide your hands down for ascents and have your hands on the regular part of the handle for everything else, but I found that I didn't like having all that extra pole above my hands. It also has a much shorter knob at the top which makes it less comfortable grip if you prefer to grab the handles from the top.
To sum up, the handles are most important because they are what you will be holding for the entire hike and the comfort of the grip will make a difference. The ergonomic nature of the handles will also make a big difference in your comfort level.
Flick Locks: Both of these poles have flick locks and that was important to me because of ease of use. According to the information I read on the web, the twist locks can handle considerably more weight, so if you are hiking with a massive pack on your back, you will likely want to purchase a twist lock pole. I read many reviews where the person thought they had twisted their poles enough, but it wasn't and it collapsed on them during their hike. In order to avoid this, I made it a priority to get a flick lock pole since it is very easy to visually see if they are locked completely or not. I read online that the Lekis can handle 10x more weight with their flick locks compared to any other flick lock poles on the market. Part of my issue with the black diamonds was they collapsed on me several times during my hikes. One time my foot hit a soft spot on the edge of a trail. I went sliding down 5 or 6 feet. When I finally got back up I noticed both of my poles had collapsed about 5 or 6 inches and I had to readjust them. This is part of the reason that I went to the Lekis. I was hopeful that I could keep the flick lock and have them be able to handle more weight. To my surprise, the Lekis started collapsing immediately and I realized that there are two methods of adjustment. There was a screw that could be twisted to tighten the mechanism. Once that was tightened more, it made it harder to close the flick lock but the lock was so much stronger. In all fairness, I never noticed if there was that ability for adjustment on the black diamonds. It would have been helpful to know that. I will have to take a peek the next time I am in the store.
Shock absorption: There seem to be three different kinds of poles on the market. Those without any shock absorption, those with a "lite" version of absorption, and those with considerable and adjustable levels of shock absorption. For me, I didn't purchase anything with a lot of absorption because the purpose of the poles is not to give you "bounciness" on the trail, it is to support you. I certainly don't want my poles compacting if my feet are going out from under me. Also I read that those types of poles are very noisy if adjusted out to the most "bouncy" level. The Black Diamonds had the "lite" version. If you pressed down on the pole you could see the height of the pole compress. But you will likely feel no difference between a pole with this lite version and no shock absorption at all. It is not noticeable. The only reason to get the lite version is if you believe that it will make a difference for your joints in the long run. It likely won't increase your comfort level on the trail, however. This model of Lekis doesn't have any shock absorption and I haven't noticed a difference.
Now here are some points on trekking poles in general. The reason I purchased these poles is because my knees were killing me going downhill on trails (almost 40 yrs old and way out of shape does not help my situation). I didn't want to have to stop my fun new hiking hobby so I did some internet research and discovered that the one biggest recommendation I could find was to buy some poles. They take pounds of pressure off your knees. And yes, I used to be one of those people who scornfully looked at others with poles and wondered what the point was. Now I am one of those folks who happily uses their poles. It made an amazing difference on my knees. The other surprising benefit of poles is that they give you a full body workout (you'll use 90% of the muscles in your body and burn 40% more calories). Think of a skiier who uses their poles to propel themselves forward. Now think of using your poles aggressively going uphill. You will become like a four legged animal. Taking the weight off your legs will make you want to go uphill faster, and if you are aggressive about using the poles you will feel all of the muscles in your back (I did for an entire month until I realized I could use my upper body as much as I wanted and I eased up on how much I used the poles going uphill). These poles also allow me to hike in more comfortable shoes than hiking boots. You can hike in running shoes or in my case I hike in my keen sandals that have hardly any grip on the bottom. I probably shouldn't do that since my feet have slid a few times, but my poles have kept me upright, and the extra two points on the ground of stability have kept my ankles from twisting. The point is, you will be able to wear a more comfortable shoe if you want and the poles can help compensate for it. (Obviously you should have a decent pair of shoes if you are on a "hard" trail.)
My recommendation is to get these Leki trekking poles. Definitely get a pair with the newer corklite handles if not this particular model.
