I hike ten mile treks on the weekends and decided to buy a walking staff to take the load off of my knees while on the trail. This walking stick is beautifully crafted and made extremely well. sasafrass is a little heavy though and this can be a consideration during really long hikes. overall quality is excellent I am sure this stick will last me for years to come1

I had been looking for a rustic looking walking stick, yet heavy enough to support my husband. This was just the item I was looking for. My biggest fear was it would not be heavy. I was thrilled when it arrived I found it to be sturdy! I loved the design. The handle is also easy for him to grip and also provides that sense of support he needs. He didn't not want a traditional cane nor did he want anything with ball on the top that you see in most rustic designs. This was perfect!

Got 2 of these, one each for my Mom and Dad. Mom was thrilled, Dad was skeptical, insisting he didn't need it. Well, Dad fell going out to get the mail, and while he was only bruised up, now he's a firm believer in the value of the stick. Well done, nice sticks, sturdy and the shipping time was awesome. Thanks, guys :)

Tracks Lite Walking Staff - In Your Choice of Sizes Review

Tracks Lite Walking Staff - In Your Choice of Sizes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have owned the Tracks Lite Walking Staff for over 15 years. I have arthritis in my hands, ankles and knees. The pole is extremely light weight - 10 ounces for the 48 inch length. I can carry it without fatigue for an extended hike. The walnut knob is smooth and perfect for resting my hand on the top of the pole while descending, so I don't have to maintain a painful grip on the pole. The aircraft aluminum has been more than strong enough for any amount of weight I've put on it and shows no fatigue. The wrist strap is comfortable and works well for either supporting my weight on my wrist, or letting the pole drag loosely behind me as I crawl around rocks or trees. With the 48 inch length I have been able to strap it to the side of my backpack without interfering with walking. I am 5'6" and the 48" length works well for either ascending or descending steep trails. Taller people may wish to consider the 52" staff.
I have had two minor issues. The foam grip is not closed cell, so it retains water during those wet Northwest Washington hikes. Also, after 15 years the foam has gotten a bit stiff. The rubber foot can come off in mud or when dragging the pole. I have lost two this way. The pole functions well without the rubber foot, but tears up the trail more and is more likely to skid on rock. Replacement feet and grip are available from Cascade Designs.
Tracks Foot (Paw Print with Adapter)
Tracks Rubber Foot Replacement
I don't find either of these problems to be more than slightly annoying. The pole itself is still the best I have used. I prefer the simplicity, lightness and stability over any adjustable pole I have tried.

Excellent relief for the hiker who also carries a camera. This one's price and construction are well matched.

This adjustable-length walking staff is built with the same features as the Sherlock staff, but without a foam sheath so the length-adjustment push-button holes are exposed. It has an adjustable Wedge Lock wrist loop, a removable walnut knob with a universal camera mount, and a spike tip beneath a removable rubber foot. Tracks walking staffs and trekking poles help you walk smarter. They reduce the impact of each step you take so that weight which is normally carried by your lower body is transferred to your arms and torso, lessening the stress on your legs by 510 pounds or more. This means you get more power and traction going uphill, and save your knees and ankles when coming back down. All Tracks staffs are hand-built with high-strength, lightweight anodized aluminum tubing. They are available as single walking staffs and paired trekking poles. Their soft foam handgrip stays comfortable hour after hour, while their adjustable wrist straps aid transfer of weight when walking.

Mine stayed strong for crossing streams or hiking on rocky trails, especially at Mount Osceola Trail in New Hampshire while it was very slippery with snow and icy water. I got my 2 poles as a set and was free with purchase of Mountainsmith Women's Laurel Backpack. I used only one pole at a time because I wanted one hand free and often switch pole from one hand to another. Though I relied on only one pole, I never fell "yet" even in the dark (in the rain at White Oak Canyon and Ceder Run at AT, Virginia). Of course, you will need good hiking boots to balance your feet. I have mine about a year now so can't tell for long lasting quality.

Brunton Three-section Monopod for Binoculars and Transits Review

Brunton Three-section Monopod for Binoculars and Transits
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Brunton monopod for use as a walking stick for hiking, and a little added stability for my ultra zoom digital camera. It's very light at 9.5 ounces (approx a half a pound), but still works as a very sturdy walking stick. It collapses to a portable 25.5 inches, and extends to 62.5 inches. Most of the other double duty (monopod and walking stick) poles were about the same length collapsed, but a good 10 inches shorter than the Brunton fully extended which could be a problem for a tall photographer. It has a nice foam rubber handle, and a rubber tip to provide ample traction. No carbide tip, but that wasn't a huge concern for me. With the lower portion partially or fully collapsed and the upper portion fully extended there's little to no flex when applying significant weight (leaning 200+ lbs onto the pole). With the lower leg fully extended the pole flexes some when applying significant weight, but not enough to be a problem in my experience. The weight of a camera would never make this flex, so no worries in that department. Overall I'm very satisfied, and the price on Amazon can't be beat.

I am partial to Leki hiking poles and these are the best that I have used. I have used them on Mt. Kenya, Kilimanjaro, on 4 weeks of hiking in the Andes, hiking small peaks in Scotland, and in many places in the US. They are comfortable, solid, durable poles. The grip material is easier on the hands than rubber. The grip angle is nice. Repair parts are available all over the world (though I have only replaced the tips). I have no complaints and lots of compliments about these poles.

Hike with confidence with this pair of LEKI Super Makalu Hiking Poles, which provides a comforting feeling of security and balance as you trek over rugged terrain. It features LEKI's Soft Antishock System (SAS), an internal suspension system that cushions the impact of each pole plant for comfort and security--especially while descending trails. The COR-TEC grips offer a comfortable, ergonomic design made of 80 percent natural, ground cork. The shaft's 15-degree positive angle keeps the wrist in neutral position during pole plants and properly places the pole tip for optimum support. The concave, cylindrical carbide flextips offer secure hold when walking off road. The Auto Comfort strap adjusts without the use of buckles and is lined with a soft, wicking material that dries quickly. LEKI's Easy Locking System (ELS) provides a secure adjustment hold with the least amount of torque (hand strength required).
It's named after the Makalu peak in the Himalayas, the fifth largest mountain in the world at 8,475 meters and believed to be named after the throne of the Hindu god Shiva.

About LEKILEKI, the world’s leading manufacturer of ski, hiking and trekking poles, had its start in Kircheim, Germany as a hobby of its founder, Karl Lenhart, an airframe mechanic and avid skier. Lenhart believed aluminum would make a superior ski pole compared to the heavy steel models available in the late 1940’s. After successfully creating lightweight poles for his friends, in 1954, the hobby became a full time business. LEKI originated the use of nylon webbing for straps and created plastic molded grips and baskets in place of metal and leather. Additionally, Lenhart developed an aluminum tempering process that produces pole shaft with incomparable strength, durability, and reliability.
In 1984, Klaus Lenhart, Karl’s son, assumed leadership and shortly there after developed the first dual-component grip. He is also responsible for improving adjustable pole-locking technology and grip innovations such as the Trigger Click-In system and COR-TEC, a material made of real cork and latex. As the ski market continued to flourish, LEKI began manufacturing hiking poles primarily for European mountain guides. The concept of using two poles as means of relieving stress on knee joints and the lower back appealed to climbers who also saw benefits in performance and safety. LEKI poles eventually caught on with the general hiking and trekking population that recognized and appreciated the preventive health benefits as well as the climbing support and stabilizing effects. In 1990, LEKI USA was incorporated. The North American market has embraced the company’s line of alpine, Nordic, back country, mountaineering, Nordic walking, and trekking poles. Like their European counterparts who have been loyal to LEKI for nearly five decades, North American outdoor enthusiasts know and appreciate LEKI quality and value.

Ive had these for a couple months now and am a firm beliver in the firm hold of the flicklock. I used REI poles for a while (don't even bother) which would slip 5 or 10 cm every mile or so. I was considering Leki and read their locking mechanism fails in very cold weather so this was the obvious winner. The shock feature is nice as is the lower grip for the inclines. Very lightweight, any lighter you'd have to get carbon fiber, and unless you baby those they are prone to snapping (believe me, I know all too well). A winner through and through!!!

LEKI Nordic Walking Speed Pacer Vario T2 Poles (120cm)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been Nordic walking (really hiking up and down mountains) for nearly 4 years.
I used to love these poles. They are carbon and don't vibrate like aluminum poles. And they are light.
However I continually have issues with the locking mechanism not locking. I have sent the poles back once. Leki has a lifetime guarantee. They sent out repaired poles. But I have failures again.
However... having the locking mechanism fail (will not lock at all) is terrible. Once I had to use the poles at their shortest size since I couldn't lock them. Another time I had to abandon the trip.
I have Leki traveler poles I use when traveling by air and have had no problems with them.
I have given up on these an have just ordered some SWIX fixed length carbon poles.

I've been hiking for 40 years and usually have used free walking "sticks" so was a little skeptical about spending 150 bucks for store-bought. But....after using these poles on my last 4 outings (total about 50 miles of Northern California Trinity Alps Wilderness) I'm convinced they have taken 10-20% of the strain/stress off my knees and overall energy consumption on hard uphill/downhill/stream crossings. For flat walking you don't much need them but for all the other conditions they are great! Easily adjustable, lightweight, and since I've been hiking solo more, they allow me to feel more safe when hiking on difficult trail conditions. I'd reccomend them for any age hiker. The anti-shock feature really works.

Built for strength and reliability on even the most challenging terrain, LEKI's Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles allow you to tackle any adventure with confidence. Extended grips and high-performance features make the Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles a premium offering.Peak AERGON XL Antishock trekking poles feature LEKI's Soft Antishock System (SAS) Lite that reduces stress on the joints, muscles and ligaments. The combination of internal steel spring and elastomer creates a smooth and unique suspension system that is quieter and reduces shock more effectively than other designs. LEKI places the SAS Lite system closer to the point of impact by embedding it inside the shaft of the lower pole section, keeping the spring cleaner and requiring less maintenance.Incorporating a 15-degree positive angle that preserves a natural position for your wrists, dynamic, lightweight AERGON grips have an ovoid shape that can be palmed or held traditionally. A rubberized, dimpled top offers a textured grip point and easy-adjust straps reduce stress on your wrists and provide additional security and comfort. The extended length of the Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles' grips allows you to grasp lower on the shaft, eliminating the need to shorten the length of the poles every time you encounter a steep slope or side hill traverse.LEKI's Super Lock System (SLS) uses wide thread patterns and steep-angled lock mechanisms to provide quicker and easier adjustments and is up to 60 times more secure than other locking systems. The SLS locking system is far less prone to loosening while in use, giving you peace of mind even in challenging situations. Peak AERGON XL Antishock poles employ carbide flex tips that deflect up to 30 degrees without damaging the lower pole sections. This reduces the risk of pole breakage if the pole should get caught between rocks or tree roots on the trail.
