(More customer reviews)Years ago I bought the Shakespear kit that came with a reel and a Telescopic Pole that was 4 foot 6 inches. My Telescopic Pole got stuck in the extended position, and I broke it off which was a stupid thing to do because I could have put the big end under hot water, and poured ice water over the little end, and with some WD-40 spray I might have managed to free it up. I realize now that slinging the pole to its extended extension is what made my pole get stuck in the extended position. It is best to gently pull each segment to its extended position just as you would do when you gently push each segment back to the rod's compact position.
So remember this review that it is good to slightly lubricate the sections and keep them clean and do not sling the pole to its extended extension!
Compact Telescopic Poles are the only way to go, and this 4 feet and 6 inches pole is just the right size to cast in low tree line areas, or if you are under a small bridge where big poles just will not work.
Remember, DO NOT SLING TELESCOPIC POLES TO THEIR EXTENDED POSITION.

(More customer reviews)I got this shipped to me in a box about 5 feet long. The problem is that this rod is about 1.5 feet smaller than that in its "un-tellescoped" state. Since there was no packing material included, the rod was free to crash around inside the box during shipping. As a result, my rod came to me with the base cap broken in three pieces. I'll be going to Home Depot to try to find something similar to keep the rod sections from falling out the bottom. For the price, not bad...just dissappointing.

It is exactly how it is described. It was just a little shy of 14 ft. 9 but still very happy. The end where you hold it is covered with a material that gives a good grip. The reel works and is filled with line, ready to fish. I have not tried yet but it feels great. Before ordering I exchanged emails with the owner, to be sure that he has the length as advertised. Well, this kit has everything you need. Rod, reel, line, weights, floats, lures and hooks. I know it's not for the really-serious fishers out there, but this worked fantastic for us! My son even caught a fish!

Plastic handle. Plastic eyelets. Poorly glued. I used this pole on a trip to the bahamas recently. With the first strike, the pole itself cracked where the thickest part of the rod meets the handle. I managed to land the less than 1 lb reef fish, but the pole was rendered useless. Then upon collapsing the pole, the eyelets came unglued. What crap! This is worthy of zero stars! There are much better options for your money.

(More customer reviews)I bought the Pocket Fisherman for pickeral fishing on Lake of the Woods in Ontario. Fit and finish was good. I followed the directions and it worked well. Casted not too bad. We caught 9 walleyes total; three by the RONCO. My main beef about this rig is that it is very difficult telling when a fish is on the line. My guess is that the rod is so short and stiff that it does not transmit the movement of the fish on the line very well to the fisherman's hand. eg, I felt a tug on the line and it felt like I was reeling in a dead load of seaweed, no fight at all. When I got the "seaweed" to the side of the boat, I was amazed to see a twelve inch walleye. I think perhaps there are better telescoping rods on the market. I give this product two stars **

(More customer reviews)Purchased so I could keep it in my car for those "Just in case" moments. Used it several times and have two general gripes that leave me wanting more.
1) the reel doesn't seem that great. I understand it isn't a $100, 10bb, graphite coated reel, but at the same time I have other inexpensive reels that are lighter, appear more durable, and actually lock when forward motion stops. It just feels sloppy. Did I mention the paint chips almost immediately... just annoying.
2) While I realize a multi-part rod will eventually come apart, this one seems to do it rather quickly. After every 4-5 casts I found myself adjusting one part of the rod or another.
Other than that the setup and breakdown times are short, and it is handy to have. I could probably just swap reels, but why should I have to. I just keep wondering if another $15 dollars would have given me more peace of mind.

(More customer reviews)I bought this mainly for the rod. I have tried many telescopic rods, and most are far from perfect, including this one, but, this is the best one I have found so far. What I liked most about this one is the small size, it is very easy to put in a small pack or fishing purse. It is fairly sturdy for it's size, I have reeled in a few decent size trout with it. I don't think I would use it for anything larger that 12-14" trout. The only problems I had with the rod, was some of the eyes weren't glued too well, and would come loose. I just glued them back and all is good now. Overall, a good combo for the price.

(More customer reviews)I have two of these and they work great for channel catfish. I have not used them for large blues or caught a flathead on one, but for large channels they hold up nicely. The bait alarm seems gimicky but properly adjusted it has alerted to me to many fish when my back is turned, I'm snelling a hook and not watching, or down the bank putting a fish on the stringer. To make the spincast bait alarm work correctly you have to point the rod tip toward the water so the rod holder needs to be the right kind, not a verticle one. Bass Pro sells a nice bank rod holder that works well with these combos. In 3 years I have had to replace the batteries once on one of the reels (very easy to do), and of course the line should be changed out at least once a year. This is a good combo for beginners and serious fishermen alike, it should not let you down.

I originally bought the rod for a convenient, light surf rod I could keep in my car.
With a Shimano 4000 size reel and 14 lb test, it worked great for casting baits with a 1 or 2 oz. sinker for whiting, sand perch and pompano (a 3 lb pompano is a real battle, and the rod handled it fine, although I don't recommend loading it out with the 25lb test line it rates at).
Where it really shines, though, is as a GREAT crappie rod. With a Shimano 200 size reel and 10 lb test, it casts light jigs and baits very well, and can be used as a cane pole as well.
It handles bass and about any freshwater fish great, and is much more versatile than a similar 12 foot "crappie rod", designed for "crappie reels" and limited to cane pole type usgae.
The reel seat works fine, but it just "feels" like it will be the problem if and when any problems arise, hence the 4 instead of 5 rating
