I agree with you. The instructions are terrible. However the goal is the best in the mid-range price.
The new systems like this one has a two piece pole. The bottom pole is straight with no holes and the top pole has holes and is beveled to go over the bottom. The bevel is about 4 or 5" deep so that's how far the bottom must go in. Mark the bottom pole about 5" down and then bang the top pole on by bouncing on a solid surface till it goes down to the mark or close. I would not have stopped after 2". If it just won't go, I would call Spalding for a new pole. They are good about sending out parts, fast too-800-558-5234. A one piece pole would be best but would require all shipping to be done via truck not UPS so more expensive plus, would it have fit in your minivan?
The PLASTIC ground sleeve should not be used unless you plan on moving soon. It is plastic and allows too much wobble. Goals should be as sturdy as possible not removable.
The pole should go directly into the cement about 14" or to the top of sleeve if you insist on using that. Level the pole at the top because that segment will hold the backboard. Face in the direction you want it to face and let dry for 3 sunny days.
Day2 is easier done with a ladder not by removing the pole. Simply carry an arm up the ladder and bolt. Carry the second with plates and bolt. Attach the crank thingy. With helper, attach the backboard. Attach the rim and tighten all bolts. Find 10', mark crank thingy, apply sticker. Doing the Day2 from the back of a pickup is easiest and a 1 man job.
Now is when you want to add concrete to the pole. Mix another bag a bit wetter than usual so it will pour from a bucket down the pole. Do this slowly to not make a mess. Also, tape the joint on the pole because some cement will leak out there and it stains the pole and won't come off. Let it dry for two days and remove tape.
The instructions are bad, written by lawyers i'm sure. Read them to get the idea and also use them for all the details of bolts and washers but do the rest my way.

I find that the backboard however needs a little more support in the back because hitting the ball against certain places causes the entire backboard to reverberate and the ball to not react properly. Other than that it's an excellent backyard goal. UPDATE - 7/3 - THE Adjustable goal keeps slamming down whenever you hit the rim hard, pretty dangerouse if you ask me!

(More customer reviews)I had high expectations for this backboard considering it was the one recommended by Spaulding since they did not have anything in stock for me to purchase direct. Amazon did a great job in getting it to us propmtly, and for free. As soon as I took it out of the box I knew this wouldn't last too long. It was fairly simple to replace the old broken backboard with this new one, a few bolts here and there. The problem is how cheap the "polycarbonate" backboard is. Topping in at a measly 1/8" thick board, I felt as if it should have said "Buyer Beware" on it. It has no reaction when a ball is shot against it rather all you hear is a resounding "THUD" and the ball falls straight down. The frame is cheaply made and has severe wobble to it when a shot is made. Even with 200 lbs of water in the base and the goal squatting at 8 foot, it has way too much movement. I suppose it will be fine for my 8 and 5 year old but I'm sure glad I didn't have a 3 on 3 tourney scheduled with the guys after receiving this.

Spalding 8406S Universal Mounting Bracket Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this mounting bracket to install my Huffy backboard. The backboard company, Huffy, recommended the installation bracket. No big shock since they are both the same company (which I found out later). Anyhow, right away I could tell this wasn't going to be easy or fun. The holes in the mounting bracket were drilled wrong so I had to re-drill new holes, through metal (yay), just to put the bracket together. But then I discover, after drilling the holes, that the assembly requires 14 of a particular nut/bolt/washer set, and the package only comes with twelve. When you read the parts manifest it even says it comes with 12. But when you put it together, it instructs you to use 14, and shows 14 in the diagrams. Nice.
Okay, moving on. When you get to page 13 of the instruction manual and you are realizing that they've (The Chinese) screwed you out of the essential tools and parts which render this mounting bracket obsolete, you discover a little note on the bottom of the page which states: The hardware required to mount this bracket to the wall is NOT included. What? What did I buy then? Where's the hardware set for the hardware? How is this universal?! You mean to tell me that you can assemble the whole thing (if you're a freaking mechanical engineer, that is), only to discover that you have to prop the thing against the wall because you can't hang it on the wall of the garage?! And then, the whole time you're trying not to lose your mind, you have your kids there saying over and over again in some nightmare of a litany, "Dad, when will it be ready? Dad, when will it be ready?"
So what do you do? You call customer service and guess what? An answering machine. Always an answering machine. They NEVER answer the phone. Evidently they screen their calls. So by the time you've called them three times, and they can tell you're a bit peeved, forget about getting a call back. Never gonna happen, chap.
My advice. Go to the Salvation Army, buy some rusty old rim, and screw that hoop directly to the wall. That way, at least, the only screwing that will have been done is by you, and not to you.

I bumped this to 5 stars because this thing is incredible strong. Last week we had 60mph winds and a 60 foot tree fell into my driveway and landed on the backboard. It balanced there for 4 days until we got our power back and I was able to break out my chainsaw and get rid of the tree. With all this has gone through, I am simply amazing how they can put out a product like this at this price. Talk about quality. If it can stand up to a 60 foot tree falling on it, I'm pretty happy! I can post a picture if anyone is interested.
First let me say that dealing with Dazadi was excellent. My delivery came with the box in ripped open and what looked like large punctures. I opened it, checked for all the parts and then noticed the backboard was cracked. I called Dazadi and in a week I had a new backboard. The rep on the phone was VERY helpful, spoke clearly and was very helpful. He assured me that would stand behind their sale...and they did. Dazadi gets 5 plus stars! I just had to mention that....now on to the review.
Aside from poor packaging by Spalding, the directions are almost horrible. The real problem is checking all the parts and identifying everything. I had so many bolts, etc., that were not listed, and some were just slightly longer than the other and I had to guess (wrongly...of course) and then change everything. Still, putting everything together took me about 2 hours (my 4 and 6 year olds helped me, or else it might have been a bit faster). The handle to raise and lower the hoop is really great and works very nicely and very easily....putting the springs together was not so easy. The key is to read the directions several times BEFORE you start anything. Start to finish. Even mock it up first to make sure you find the parts of the directions that do not really make sense and you identify the extra parts (that you will use). They have a partial picture id guide for some of the parts, but not all of the parts, so you will have to read the descriptions for each part number. Also, putting the long bolts can be a chore. Use the bolts to ream out or loosen up the extra paint that does not allow the bolt to get through. Do it to all of the holes BEFORE you start and it will make things much easier.
At its lowest point, my 4 year old daughter can through a full sized basketball easily into the hoop, and at it's highest....well, it's pretty high! It is a lot of fun. You should buy some kind of pad for the pole because you don't want anyone running into it. You can buy special pads that will wrap around it easily. I'm glad that I purchased this, and it is very sturdy with no real vibration (my friend has a portable one and it has a lot of vibartion when the ball hits). I would like to have taken off 1.5 stars for terrible directions, but one is all I could do, and I didn't want to leave it with 3 stars.
As for value, this is a great deal. The quality is very good, and we will see if anything cracks or breaks when the winter comes....but I doubt it. I am happy with my purchase and thrilled with Dazadi!

(More customer reviews)Worth the price. Just finished setting up. Took two days with a the assistance of a handyman. Need 900lbs of concrete...about 8 bags for the base. Two bags to fill the pole. Very secured system. Looks great.
The backboard shakes only slightly when there's impact from the ball (normal with all basketball systems). The pole doesn't move at all.
Only issue was the original system that was sent had a cracked backboard ( looked like a manufacturing issue). I was amazed how quickly Amazon sent a replacement (about 2 days) and emailed me a FED EX label to return the broken board.

Spalding 309 Extension Arm Pole System Review

(More customer reviews)Had some problems with the delivery, the 10' pole was not delivered on the first try. Amazon handled it well. Product is much stronger than the low end portables, has much less give than my previous pole. Definitely plan for a 2 person installation, or 3 if you can swing it. There's concrete to mix and pour, and also concrete to fill the pole before setting. So the final assembly requires some stout backs.
Has been in use for several weeks now. Very pleased with the performance. Now I need a better backboard to go with it!

(More customer reviews)Read all the reviews on this. Mind you, I was a bit skeptical at the price, but in the end, I locked and loaded on this one and am very happy. Below is my written review and I've also attached some video. Read the review first.
As for it being complicated to put together, I really did not find this to be an issue. Sure, there were a couple of vague areas, but I found if I just paused, thought about it for a while, the answer came to me. Aside from putting one bolt in backwards (kids could have bonked their head on it so just turned it around) it all worked out nicely. One adult can do most of the work, but you must have two for the mounting of the back board and hoop.
As for quality. It's just fine.
For little kids, I think this is perfect. If I was buying it for older kids, I might get one of the other models with a bigger back board and where the board is extended off the pole. I recorded a couple of videos which shows you how the back board sits right on the pole. As one reviews stated, if you were running and slamming, you'd run right into the pole. Sometimes the ball hits the pole and kicks it back out. So this hoop system is really more for "goofing" around than serious play.
If you have a limited budget and / or you just want something for goofing around, or for little kids who have an interest in Bball, really I can't find any faults. The price can't be beat. The system is very stable and sound.

Unlike in-ground basketball hoops--which are typically anchored in concrete--this portable hoop rolls on wheels, letting you position the basket support in your desired location, from the back patio to the middle of the cul-de-sac. All you have to do is fill the 27-gallon base with water or sand and play.
Lifetime knows that younger players aren't always ready for a 10-foot hoop, which is why the basket boasts a height-adjustment mechanism. The telescoping mechanism adjusts from 7.5 to 10 feet in 6-inch increments--no tools required--letting players of all ages and skill levels enjoy the game on their own terms. Aspiring dunkers can also gradually raise the basket 6 inches at a time as their vertical improves, although the 18-inch solid steel rim is not a breakaway rim. The black rim is instead extremely stable, with 1/2-inch steel braces, welded steel net hooks, and a 50-gram net.
And players needn't worry about the 44-inch backboard wearing dramatically over time thanks to the UV-protected, high-density polyethylene construction. This sturdy plastic material helps the board resist chipping and cracking while protecting the graphics from fading. Also equipped with a black, powder-coated, three-piece pole, the Lifetime system carries a five-year warranty.
About Lifetime In the beginning, all the founder of Lifetime Products wanted was a sturdier basketball pole for his backyard. With this in mind, he found and purchased a piece of heavy-duty used pipe, a sheet of plywood, and a basketball rim. The resulting backyard basketball standard functioned perfectly in his backyard. Seeing the potential of his hoop, he placed an ad in the local free classified newspaper and made his first sale. The rest--as they say--is history. He created the American PlayWorld Company in 1973, based out of his garage in Riverdale, Utah. After expanding into several other types of playground equipment, he eventually moved to a bigger location in South Ogden, Utah. Several years later, the company transformed the basketball industry by introducing the Quick Adjust basketball pole, the first complete basketball system you could raise and lower with a broomstick. In 1986, American PlayWorld created Lifetime Products, a separate company intended to concentrate specifically on manufacturing adjustable basketball systems. In the ensuing years, the company has grown from having 18 employees in a 32,000-square-foot space in half a warehouse to more than 1,400 employees and 2.6 million square feet over 23 separate buildings.

(More customer reviews)This is a nice addition to our Spalding goal. The padding is fairly thin but aesthetically the blue vinyl cover is stunning and easily ties onto the pole. The string provided to lace it to the pole is very sturdy. This is my choice for pole pads.
