ABO Gear Tripod Shelter Review

ABO Gear Tripod Shelter

To anyone who complained about how difficult it is to set up, Eagle Scout or not, I can only say that you're not doing it the right way. Or you're too weak to do it. Either way, if it's done right, it's no harder than tying boots snugly.
Hint: when you're ready to bow the 1st pole, set the ferruled end on the ground, vertically between your feet while you're standing up and making sure no dirt can fill it (I set it on a sandal instead of right on the dirt). Pull the fabric down systematically, until the ring passes the ferruled end. Grab the fabric and the pole about 2-3 inches from the end with one hand like you're choking it, making sure the fabric does not slide out again. Lift the pole off the ground so you can see what you're doing. With the other hand, slide the pin into the pole. It's that easy. Repeat the process for the 2nd and 3rd poles.
It took me less than 20 minutes from start to finish, all by myself. The key is to plant the ferruled end of the pole securely on the ground while you work the fabric with both of your free hands.
It's the best shade I've ever bought. The other shade that I own, a 10'x10' type, weighs 50 lbs and is quite large in a package, compared to this 11-lbs shade that fits in a small nylon sack. The 2008 model comes with heavy-duty poles which is an improvement to the smaller diameter poles of the earlier model. There is no way these poles will split, unlike the earlier version, as reported by some.

About ABO Gear ABO (Australian Beach Outdoor) began in 1995, with the humble goal of finding a solution to the common beach towel. The company called its first product the ABO mat--an oversized cotton mat with four stakes to prevent it from blowing away in the wind which folded into a convenient fanny pack. This initial product launch led to other popular items, such as beach tents, picnic blankets, beach hammocks, and more. In developing new products, the company's first aim is always to create gear that minimizes ABO's carbon footprint. ABO gear remains a fast-growing company with products in the beach, outdoor, pet, gift, and travel goods market.

Rio Sports Sun Shelter Review

Rio Sports Sun Shelter
Average Reviews:

Considered this tent vs ABO Gear Instent. Decided to try the Rio because of low price, SPF50 and lightweight. Instent costs ~2x, weights about 2x, and is only SPF35. Although I would have liked the Instent's fuller coverage and easy set up feature, I didn't want its extra weight since I was going to use it on beach trips and wanted to cut down on weight I had to carry in/out.
Took this to NJ shore beaches. Set up was relatively straightforward. Two shorter and one longer tent poles. Longer one goes across the long axis (side to side). Shorter ones go vertically along two back spines. If you work with the wind, the tent will spread out and help you thread the poles through. If you are not familiar, practice once first.
Once the poles are in place, you need to put the stakes in. Also tie the nylon ties at the pole junctions for additional stability. You definitely need to use the four metal stakes in sand or grass in any kind of wind because the structure is light as a kite. In calm to moderate draft, it stands relatively well. But in an occasional to sustained gusty wind, typical at many beaches on a nice breezy summer day, the wind blowing from behind could buckle the poles and temporarily collapse the dome, which is not dangerous but annoying. The stakes did a good job holding down the tent (make sure you drive the stakes into the ground at an angle). I would not recommend facing the opening into the wind. Also even without the wind, sitting on a beach chair inside the dome, your head may rub the tent, depending on how deep inside you sit, because of the low dome shape. Not the worst thing but can be annoying sometimes.
Sun coverage depends on the angle of the sun and the direction it's facing. Because it is basically a half dome, you need to consider the combination of wind direction and sun's angle to see if you should even use it on any particular day. If the wind is blowing towards the sun then it's pretty much useless. If both sun and wind are from the same direction, then it's probably worth using. In between, you'll have to gauge.
My 3 yo son enjoyed playing around it, putting sand inside on the floor and in the two inside pockets and windows. But then kids will enjoy playing with almost any kind of tent structure. Don't expect mobile kids to stay put inside. This, and other tents like it, are best for babies and nursing mothers and people who want partial shade and wind break.
Material (nylon) feels a bit thin and the seams are single stitched so I expect them to rip after a while. Not for rugged use. The carrying bag/stuff sack will likely burst after a while unless you compress the tent and roll it tightly in a neat package. I can see the threads in the bag's seam as it is being stuffed.
But for ~$30-35, it's not a bad deal, as long as you don't have strong or kite-flying wind. Overall, I like it for its light weight and SPF50 and reasonable cost.

Texsport Wyoming Arbor Sunshade Review

Texsport Wyoming Arbor Sunshade
Average Reviews:

I purchased the product with the intent (no pun intended) to use it as a shade shelter for camping and the beach. Set up is somewhat complicted due to the use of a sleeve system instead of a corded hook system used in similar tents/shelters. It was apparent early on that the glue holding the ferrules on to the ends of the fiberglass rods was not up to snuff as about a third of them pulled off and this got worse the ssecond time i set it up. I set it up in the back yard first and then a second time on the beach. Unfortuantely the top is not vented in any way so even a minimal wind load results in unacceptable deformation of the entire top/fiberglass rod assembly. This resulted in the need to return. I would recommend it only for minimal to zero wind conditions and even at that one would need to secure all the ferrules with glue or duct tape.

ABO Gear Instent Shelter Review

ABO Gear Instent Shelter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Abo Gear Instent as a beach shelter for our infant daughter. Its first use at the beach in cool spring weather went well. The Instent was fast to set up and take down. Our baby enjoyed exploring the tent and soon fell asleep. Not much room though for adults to sit comfortably and the ceiling height prevents use of chairs.
Our second experience with the Instent was very different. At the beach on a sunny day in June, the Instent got very hot inside despite a normal ocean breeze and the windows open. Baby was sweating and crying so we took her out. During this time, one of the corner poles kept collapsing and I had to push it back into its socket. None of the other shelters on the beach seemed to be having problems. On take down, one of the plastic poles (maybe the same one) broke from its socket and tore into the fabric of the tent, rendering our Instent useless.
I contacted Abo Gear, and despite a quick response and a promise of, "We'll take care of the problem", I have not received a replacement or a status in sixty days. I contacted Abo Gear again and they responded with questions about the weather on the day it broke. It seems Abo Gear is looking for a way out of honoring their warranty.
On a recent Instent-less trip to the beach, a friend purchased a Lil' Nursery tent for us. It is smaller, cheaper and better ventilated than the Instent and worked fine on the beach in the July sun, though it does require a few minutes to set up. I wish I had bought this first and saved eighty bucks on the Instent. Since Abo Gear customer service never came through for me, I don't know whether I had a lemon Instent or whether there are major quality problems with this product. Based on my experience with Abo Gear and the tent's performance, I give them both the lowest rating. If by chance I receive a replacement, I will update this review.

Texsport Calypso Cabana Beach Shelter Review

Texsport Calypso Cabana Beach Shelter
Average Reviews:

Bought this for our spring break camping trip in Florida's panhandle.
First day was VERY windy. If we had a tail, I think we could have flown it as a kite. I consider it a success that the cabana didn't rip apart.
Our second adventure worked much better. Still windy, but not as bad as the first day. Filled the pockets with sand, (and buried them in sand as well) Worked great and it was nice to have a place to keep all the beach toys and get out of the sun and wind occasionally.

There's nothing better than a day at the beach, but a full day of UV rays can take its toll. Enter the Texsport Calypso cabana, a sturdy beach shelter that's ideal for long afternoons on the shore. Made of heavy-duty polyurethane-coated taffeta for increased UV protection and cool comfort, the Calypso cabana protects you on three sides, with a roof that extends over the top as you lounge below. You can sit inside the cabana to avoid the sun, lie partially covered to protect just your face, or huddle up for full-body protection when the winds start whipping.
The cabana also offers a durable ripstop polyethylene floor and three no-see-um mesh windows with zippered storm flaps. And the shelter is a breeze to set up and take down thanks to the three-pole pin-and-ring frame system and the shock-corded fiberglass poles. Other features include four weight/sand bags for increased stability, corner stakes, and a handy storage bag. Flame-retardant to CPAI-84 specifications, the Calypso cabana measures 48 by 84 by 48 inches (W x H x D) and comes in brilliant blue with rainbow stripes along the top.

Saw this item in store in Ocean City, NJ, but they didn't have any.
Got from Amazon and project is great and not too heavy. Very easy
to use and setup, great shade and coverage. Value for $50 is excellent.
Lots of compliments and it would be easy to sell these at double the
price on the beach.
Not much more heavier than the 5' model it replaced. Get an anchor
to hold in sand. Don't bother with a smaller umbrella, bigger is
better and worth the money.

Push up instant Beach Tent Beach Sunshelter Review

Push up instant Beach Tent Beach Sunshelter

Overall it is an okay product. It is easy to open, unless there is too much wind. I bought this for the beach because I am tired of trying to open an umbrella that wont stay because of the wind.
I did try it out at my house on a windy day. It worked fine there, but at the beach were there are no obstacles to slow the wind down it was a disaster. You have to have two people open it when there is a good wind. The poles will collapse on themselves too if there is too much wind. There needs to be wind slots in the back panel. No matter which way I turned it it wanted to blow away. The spikes did not hold it.
The mesh sides need to have some solid material on the bottom because sand will come in from there.
I do plan on using this product at the park or in my yard for my kids. It does open and close easily, it even rolls back up to fit back into the bag. I do not regret buying this tent. I just wished it worked better at the beach, which I originaly bought it for.

Coleman 2-Pole Sun Shade Review

Coleman 2-Pole Sun Shade
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The shelter is multifunctional in that it can be set up like a tent, a lean-to, or a canopy with some extra poles(haven't tried this one yet). The problem is this is not a one person, albeit, sometimes not even a two-person operation. And on a beach with winds of as little as 15 mph it become an exercise in perseverance. Actually had to bring some rocks to anchor this down,(the wind kept pulling up the anchors up from the sand). Sand bags might help. But frankly anything less than perfect, windless weather makes setting it up a challenge,(undo-able in less than 10 minutes). The fabric is excellent and the UV factor really shields from the sun. Once set up, functions great, used it as a lean-to in Acadia National Park on their beach front. That's why I only gave it a 3 star. Would have loved to have given it a 5 star, but its impractical for a family of 4 (2 adults-2 sm. children) or a single individual or even a couple without hassling. Probably for a group of 3-4 adults it might go smoother and not in high wind situations. Probably will be returning mine and looking for other alternative shelters.
